A few months ago, we discussed some of the most common questions we hear from curious Love Scent customers. If you still have questions about pheromones, what they do, and how to use them, this post is for you. We’re going to look at some more questions that we’ve frequently heard from those interested in the world of pheromones.

 

1. How Do Pheromones Work?

In our last FAQ post, we opened with the question we hear most often: Do pheromones really work? (Spoiler alert: yes, they do!) Now, let’s look more at the question of how they work.

Humans, like most animals, have something called the vomeronasal organ–VNO for short. It’s a sensory organ that is part of our olfactory system. When you breathe in pheromones, your VNO detects them and triggers a response in your body, just like breathing in certain scents triggers certain memories and emotions. That’s why we recommend putting pheromones on your pulse points: those pulse points act as natural diffusers that distribute the pheromones out into the air, where other people can detect them.

Research into the human VNO didn’t really take off until the 1990s. Since then, research has uncovered some very interesting pheromone effects, such as the syncing of women’s menstrual cycles, to hormonal changes in women when they smell male pheromones, to differing responses in men and women to different pheromones.

Research into the human VNO, and our responses to pheromones, continues today. We’re excited to learn more about how pheromones effect us, and how we can utilize them to improve our lives.

 

2. Can Women Use Men’s Pheromones / Can Men Use Women’s Pheromones?

“Is this a product for men or women?” “What happens when men use a pheromone product that contains copulins?” “Is AndrosteNOL a women’s pheromone or a men’s pheromone?”

Gender roles are deeply ingrained in most cultures, so it’s no surprise that many people wonder if a particular pheromone should only be used by a certain sex. The reality is that the relationship between pheromones and gender is a lot more complicated and nuanced than most people think, as we’ve discussed in the past.

Take Alpha-7. It was designed as a men’s product and is one of our most popular product for men. It contains two pheromones, AndrosteNONE and AndrosteRONE, that are typically thought of as “men’s pheromones” because of their sexual and dominant nature–traits that we are taught to associate with men. But that doesn’t mean that women can’t benefit from using Alpha-7, or that it’s dangerous for women to use it. Women in the workplace, for example, use this product to improve their perceived authority. Women can even use it in their dating lives, depending on what kind of partner they’re interested in. We love to see our customers experimenting with pheromones in many different ways, including ways that go against cultural expectations.

Other examples: men using Estratetraenol, a pheromone produced only by women, for its soothing self-effects; men using copulins, produced by the female body, to increase their own levels of testosterone; and men using AndrosteNOL, a stereotypically “female” pheromone because of its social effects, to tone down their more aggressive personality traits when dating. The list goes on.

In short, as long as you know what a pheromone does, how its effects different genders, and what you want the pheromone to do for you, you don’t need to worry about which gender a pheromone is supposedly for. You do you.

 

3. I’m Older; Can I Still Use Pheromones?

Of course older folks can use pheromones! There’s no reason you should deny yourself the benefits of these products just because you’ve been around a little longer. In fact, pheromones can be highly beneficial for older people. Our bodies naturally produce fewer and fewer pheromones as we age, leading to changes in our own behavior and the behavior of those around us, and pheromone products can help us feel more like our younger selves.

One thing for older pheromone users to keep in mind: because we produce fewer pheromones as we get older, a given pheromone cologne or perfume will work differently for wearers of different ages. Take Chikara, our most popular pheromone product for men, as an example: this is a very balanced cologne that places a lower emphasis on AndrosteNONE and AndrosteRONE than some other men’s products. This makes it an excellent choice for younger men, who are probably producing plenty of AndrosteNONE and AndrosteRONE and who will benefit more from the social effects of the AndrosteNOL found in Chikara. For an older gentleman, however, whose AndrosteNONE and AndrosteRONE production is lower than a younger man’s, Chikara often won’t have as noticeable an effect. An older man will want to either use more Chikara or go with a more potent pheromone cologne, such as Alpha-7.

On the same note, older pheromone users can afford to be slightly less cautious with our more potent products. Young pheromone users, whose bodies are still producing high levels of pheromones, can easily overdo it with potent formulas like Primal Instinct and Primal Women. Older folks, who have naturally lower pheromone levels, can use an extra drop or two without much concern, and will probably want to use a little more to begin with to compensate for their lower natural pheromone levels. This isn’t to say that older pheromone users can use as much of a particular product as they want, only that our risk of “overdosing” gets lower as we get older.

 

4. Do Pheromones Lose Effectiveness As They Age?

Maybe you bought a bottle of a pheromone perfume years ago and are wondering if it’s still good. Maybe you want to make sure that your financial investment won’t spoil on the shelf within a few months. Maybe you’re just curious. Whatever your reasons are for wondering, we can assure you that pheromone have a very long shelf life. If stored properly, they will last for many years.

So what is proper storage, then? Store your pheromones in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. (If you store them in the sunlight, the carrier liquid could evaporate.) If they’re on a shelf or drawer at room temperature, they’re properly stored and will last for years.

Some people swear that pheromones do better when stored in a cold place, like your refrigerator. So far, there isn’t hard evidence to suggest that cold temperatures are better for pheromone storage than room temperature; what’s more, oil-based pheromone colognes and perfumes will turn to a viscous goo at cold temperatures, because their oil base begins to solidify. If this happens, just put the bottle (tightly sealed) in some warm water to slowly bring the oil back up to room temperature.

As long as you’re taking care of your pheromones by storing them properly, they’ll last as long as you need them to.

 

5. Why Didn’t __________ Work For Me?

We hear this question a lot from people who are still working on finding the right pheromone for them. It’s very disappointing to read a pile of stellar reviews for a particular product, and receive a recommendation for it from one of us here at Love Scent, only to try it and find that it does absolutely nothing for you. This is especially frustrating if you were hoping that pheromones could improve your life in some substantial way. We hear you.

The thing to remember in this situation is that different pheromones work differently for different people. Maybe you’re already producing enough of the pheromone that is most heavily featured in the product you’re trying out, or maybe the person you’re interested in just isn’t responding to the effects a particular pheromone has. Even the scent of a particular pheromone cologne or perfume can cancel out the effects of the pheromones themselves: if someone doesn’t like a particular scent, the pheromones can only do so much to make up for it.

We know this is frustrating and disappointing, but it’s important that you don’t lose hope just because one product doesn’t work. Chances are very good that you just need to try a different product. Chikara didn’t work for you? Well, Alpha-7 is still waiting for a spin. Essence of a Woman didn’t have the effects you were hoping for? Maybe the AndrosteNOL-infused Primal Women will give you better results. Primal Instinct set your love interest on edge instead of drawing them in closer? The gentler effects of Alter Ego may be the better bet.

Another thing to remember: pheromones aren’t magic potions, and can only do so much. If a person just isn’t interested in a relationship with you, or if you’re dealing with personal problems that need more than pheromones to fix, it’s important to accept that and work to find a solution for yourself. Pheromones are very powerful tools in our lives and we don’t want to dismiss their potential, but we also don’t want to pretend that they’ll solve every problem you have all by themselves. It doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with you; it just means that some things don’t work out in our lives, and that’s okay. We want you to put your wellbeing first.
