Now, on to today’s topic: the basics of scented and unscented pheromones!

What is the difference between scented and unscented pheromones? Do scented pheromones work better? Are unscented pheromones totally scentless? Which should you choose when ordering?

All right–let’s dive right in!

SCENTED VS. UNSCENTED PHEROMONES

First, let’s clarify one thing for those who do not know: “unscented pheromones” does not mean “pheromones with no scent” or “pheromones you cannot smell.” It means “pheromones with no added scent.” Unscented pheromone products contain no perfumes, colognes, essential oils, or other sorts of fragrances. But they still have a natural pheromone smell! Depending on the pheromone, that natural smell can range from something similar to body odor to a faint sweetness to rancid vinegar.

Scented pheromone products, on the other hand, do contain added fragrances. Manufacturers add perfumes, colognes, essential oils, or other scents to scented pheromones, either to mask the natural smell of the pheromones or to add an extra element of attraction.

When our customers learn about this difference, many of them wonder and ask: do fragrances interfere with the pheromones? Wouldn’t “covering up” the pheromone smell make the pheromones useless?

In short: no, adding fragrances to pheromones doesn’t make them useless! Remember, in the first post in our Back To Basics series, we covered how pheromones work: a specialized organ in your nose, the VNO, detects pheromones in the air and transmits that information to the brain. The VNO only detects pheromones. It does not detect other smells, such as perfume or cologne. Other parts of your olfactory system detect other smells. The VNO detects pheromones whether they’re paired with a fragrance or not!

So, to recap: unscented pheromones contain no added fragrance, scented pheromones do contain added fragrance, and your body can easily detect and respond to both!

WHICH IS BETTER?

You might be wondering now: which is better–scented or unscented pheromones? The answer, as is often the case with pheromone-related questions: it depends!

As we said above, your VNO will detect pheromones even if they’re paired with a cover scent. It simply ignores other smells and focuses solely on pheromones. Adding a cover fragrance does not change how pheromones work; it just keeps the wearer smelling nice instead of like body odor. Unless you or your partner are sensitive to fragrances, there is no downside to wearing scented pheromones.

As a matter of fact, we rarely recommend wearing pheromones without a cover fragrance. As we said above, a pheromone’s natural smell can be very unpleasant. If you wear a strong-smelling pheromone without a cover scent of some kind, you could very well end up chasing people away instead of attracting them. Only a handful of unscented products in our catalog don’t need a cover scent.

So, then, what is the point of unscented pheromones? If they don’t smell good, why bother getting them? And why do manufacturers offer unscented pheromones if they shouldn’t be worn as-is?

Well, we know that people can be very particular about their fragrances. Some people have strong opinions about the types of scents they wear. Other people are very sensitive to synthetic fragrances, but not essential oils. And other people like to switch up their fragrances based on the occasion, the season, the time of day, and so on. If you’re one of these people, unscented pheromones are the best choice for you. They let you switch up your fragrances as often as you like!

If you’re not one to experiment much with fragrances, scented pheromones might be the better choice for you. You never have to worry about having an added fragrance on hand when using them. This makes them the easier and more straightforward choice. Just wear them like any other cologne or perfume!

So, to answer the question of which is “better”–it depends on you. Are you particular about your fragrances? Then go with an unscented pheromone and match them with fragrances you like. Do you like a wide variety of fragrances and don’t switch them up much? Then a scented pheromone is probably the better bet!

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

As we’ve said, the only difference between scented and unscented pheromones is the presence of a cover scent. Most of the rules for using them are the same, regardless of whether they’re scented or unscented.

For example, you should apply pheromones, scented and unscented, to the pulse points. Pulse points are the places on your body where the veins run close to your skin. (You can feel your pulse in these places, hence the name “pulse points.”) The best places are the wrists, throat, and behind the ears. Some people also like to put pheromones in the crooks of their elbows and on their chests. If you’re applying an unscented pheromone, give it a moment to dry before spraying your fragrance over it.

Another thing to keep in mind: just because you aren’t aware of the pheromones in a scented product doesn’t mean your VNO isn’t! You can still overdose on pheromones when wearing a scented formula. In fact, because you can’t smell the pheromones themselves, you might be more likely to wear too much. Make sure you’re paying attention to the amount of pheromones you’re wearing so you don’t overdo it!

Finally, remember to choose the right pheromone for the occasion. Just because a pheromone smells perfect for any occasion, don’t assume that it is perfect. Some very sexual pheromones have light, pleasant fragrances that seem great for everyday wear. Remember to judge a scented pheromone’s appropriateness for an event based off the pheromone content, not the fragrance!
